Emergency practice, 5 minutes

Emergency Ground

For the acute moments

There are moments when the nervous system is in free fall.

Anxiety that switched on without visible reason. Panic. Overwhelm. That moment when the mind runs faster than your ability to follow it.

This practice is for exactly those moments. It is not long. It doesn't require quiet or special conditions. It only requires your body and the intention to return to it.

You can do it seated, standing, in the car, in the bathroom, anywhere.

Step 1 · Physical Contact

Press your feet into the floor. Firmly. Not gently. Press.

Feel the floor beneath you. It is real. It is here. You are on it.

If you are seated, also press the backs of your thighs into the chair. Feel the chair.

Repeat quietly: The ground holds me.

Step 2 · The Five Things

Look around you. Name out loud, or quietly to yourself, five things you can see. Don't analyse. Simply name.

Table. Window. Cup. Wall. Hand.

Now four things you can hear. Three things you can touch.

The senses bring you back here. Now. Into the body.

Step 3 · The Physiological Sigh

Take one normal inhale. And then, immediately after it, without exhaling, take a second short inhale, as if "topping up" a little more air.

And then exhale long, slow, completely.

Repeat three times.

This technique, the double inhale with long exhale, directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Not a metaphor. Physiology.

Step 4 · Now

Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly.

Feel the warmth of the hands. Feel the belly moving.

Say quietly: I am here. I am safe. This will pass.

You don't need to solve the problem right now. You only need to return to the body. Everything else after that.

This practice is not a substitute for therapy with chronic anxiety or panic attacks. If you experience them regularly, seek support.
