Somatic Practice, 12 minutes

The Field

Sensing Your Energetic Boundary

This is not a visualization.

You are not going to imagine a bubble of light around yourself.

You are going to feel where you actually are.

This distinction matters. Visualization creates images. Somatic awareness creates knowing.

Most people who feel they have poor energetic boundaries, who absorb others' emotions, who feel depleted after social contact, who lose themselves in intense relationships, don't lack willpower.

They lack the felt sense of where they end and where the world begins.

This practice builds that sense. Slowly. From the inside.

Settling

Sit comfortably. Both feet on the floor.

Close your eyes. Take three ordinary breaths. Let them be however they naturally are.

Now, without changing your posture, begin to notice, from the inside, where your body is in space.

Where are your hands right now? Don't look, feel.

Where is the back of your head? Where are your shoulder blades? Where does your lower back end and the chair begin?

The Skin Layer

Begin by noticing the surface of your skin. Not touching it, just sensing it. The temperature. The air against it. The distinction between what is you and what is not you.

The skin is a real boundary. Feel it now.

The First Foot

Let your awareness expand about a foot beyond your skin in every direction, in front, behind, to the sides, above, below.

This space just beyond your skin belongs to you too.

You may feel it as temperature. As a subtle sense of density. As something you cannot name but can nonetheless notice.

If the mind says "I don't feel anything", that is also information. It means the connection to this layer has been dim. That is what this practice is for.

Arm's Length

Now let your awareness expand to arm's length around you in every direction.

This is your field. Not a metaphor. Not a spiritual concept.

A real territory of energy, nervous system, electromagnetic field, presence, that you occupy in the world.

Feel the edges of it. They don't need to be sharp. They can be soft. But they are yours.

Distinguishing

Now, with your awareness resting in your field, notice what is in it that is yours.

Your breath. Your heartbeat. Your sensations.

Notice if there is anything in this space that does not feel like yours.

Tension that is not from your body. An emotion that arrived without an obvious source. A thought that doesn't quite sound like you.

You don't need to analyze where it came from. Simply let the exhale carry it toward the edge of your field.

Not forcing it out. Just, allowing the natural boundary to do what a healthy boundary does.

Closing

Take three full breaths.

With each inhale, fill the field. Let your presence fill all the space that is yours.

With each exhale, let the edges become clearer.

Not a wall. Not a barrier. A membrane. Permeable where you choose. Solid where you need.

Open your eyes slowly. Take the room in from within your field. Stay inside yourself as you do.

After this practice, you may notice that you feel "more there." More in the room. More in yourself. This is what it feels like to be in your field.
